The founders of Mischievous Muse Press, a.k.a. The Muses, owned and ran World Nouveau Inc., a traditional publishing company, for over 10 years, during which Mischievous Muse Press functioned as its main fiction imprint.
After more than a decade at World Nouveau, the entrepreneurs found that the rigid requirements of running a traditional publishing company did not afford the creative freedom they craved when they first entered the publishing arena in early 2007.
It took a few more years and some serious soul searching, but finally they came to the hard-won conclusion that downsizing was the answer. So they closed their corporation, and launched their premier imprint as a standalone press, keeping it small enough to do what they love—publish great books that entertain, teach, and/or contribute to the world in a positive way.
"Mischievous Muse Press affords us the time & freedom to color outside the lines without the boxed-in constraints & trappings of today's publishing industry."
In the nearly 17 years that the Muses have been in business, they have published over 100 books, been lucky enough to work with some of the best authors in the world, and recently signed 2 new authors in 2024.
The next dream on the Muses' list was to build an off-grid writer's retreat in a beautiful, serene forest that would give Muse Authors a place to come together, to write, and offer a chance to learn from other authors (and the Muse's themselves), all in an environment that inspires and sparks imaginations.
That dream finally came to fruition. The Muses opened Rogue Writers Retreat at Dragonwood in Mendocino, CA in early 2020, but as fate would have it, the retreat was forced to close a few months later due to Covid-19 and has not yet resumed operation. There is no date set for reopening, but the dream is still alive.
